Abstract
The digital revolution and unprecedented growth of communication technologies at the beginning of the 21st century have touched all aspects of our lives, in effect, and have made media productions and cultural industries a profitable market for media owners; easy access to cultural productions and contents, especially pictures and films through various communicative means and large platforms has rapidly increased the distribution of these productions; in such a globalized entertainment industry hegemony, the key theme is what content and ideologies are depicted within movies and disseminated by them, because the audience, whether or not, is influenced by what they watch. Given that the research method is the best tool of collection and analyzing the data and is determined based on the aim of research, then, one of the best suitable qualitative methods to know and analyze what contents and how they represent in such a profitable market is Critical Discourse Analysis which is an interdisciplinary study of all forms of communications, exploring the relationships between discourse, its producers, and readers. It focuses on the social aspects of communication and the ways people use language to achieve specific effects. Unlike linguistic approaches that focus on the rules of language use, discourse analysis emphasizes the contextual meaning of language. Considering Fairclough’s approach as the main approach, this article discusses some of the significant Critical Discourse Analysis approaches in studying and analyzing images, narrative texts, and films. To exemplify, the analysis of a movie is introduced, applying selective items from various approaches mentioned.
